The players encounter a small child in the road crying over the body of his dead dog. As the party deals with this, the boy suddenly transforms into a giant spider. FIGHT! During the fight, another spider appears from behind the party. AMBUSH! Once the fight is over they notice the dog is still alive. Wait... it's not an injured dog! It's a shapeshifted druid who was trying to ambush the party to rob their dead bodies. It really sets up expectations that the DM is a devious SOB

I have entire villages dedicated to growing the plants & herbs used to make the potions. In that village are also the ritual casters who imbue the potion with the healing magic. These are extremely important villages. As such they are all walled, house a powerful garrison, have a prominent lord over the village. The farms that are nearby are required to be foritified manors, stone curing sheds, etc. THey must maintain suitable quarters for the light cavalry that checks on them regularly. The first piece of my major campaign has the players investigating why a farm went silent and the last patrol also vanished. One of the encounters sets a huge plot hook that keeps the players engaged.

I tie my players to being part of an adventurer's guild. That gives them accountability if they go murderhobo. The Grandmaster and his council are all Clvl 19 & 20. If the players ever want to have their own place, they can start up a new chapter in a new town. That in and of itself is an entire half year campaign

I stole this entire mystery for my next session. I changed a lot of stuff to fit my campaign and created a major twist (no werewolf!), plus I'm going to try to roleplay the investigation instead of relying on the dice. But the basic structure is yours. Thanks!

My favourite parts of fantasy fiction, from Tolkien, to Moorcock, to Howard, to Le Guin are when the protagonists visit a store and the author spends a chapter describing the shopping process. Thanks goodness D&D accommodates this vital element and can provide this classic element to allow the players to really live out the epic fantasy experience.

Well in d&d adventuring would be common, so of course it would help adventurers. I prefer to have a blacksmith as the weapon and armor shop. Keeping things in the back was unnecessary, people don’t even get to see it yet, it’s so undecorative, and for plot relevance makes stealing easier, but regardless a clerk for shopkeeping and explanations is needed.

5:00 im so glad that for my campaign I am planning a more open world and massive continent style campaign, walking from city to city takes a month in itself and there is no real limiting time constraints that will make that time such a problem. Traveling is on a hexcrawl and they are 1 hex = 1 week so traveling isn't annoying or tedious, and even if it doesn't become tedious they can simply ttavel on a caravan which will have at most 1 encounter per 4 hexes traveled, and they can even opt to just be non-combatants which just means I roll a dice heavily in their favor and on a success they don't have to step into whatever fight happens. I say 4 hexes instead of 4 months because caravans will travel faster as they are always special carages with specially trained horses and armed guards, these trips can be expensive so it will more than likely be a later game used thing. But this gives a huge amount of time for my crafting system which I will probably have to make since I find base dnd crafting a little lackluster.

Here's my idea; gathering free and mundane components for one-time-use spells can be tedious. You could have a sidequest to get some bat fur, and then never need to do it again, but what I'm thinking is that for lesser spell components like that, the process of preparation includes gathering and using the components. But then this gives me another idea, if the spell is prepared beforehand, why bother with material components? Perhaps components are only used when a spell is cast without preparation, allowing magic users some extra spell castings.

As an Alchemist Artificer, a player can take the “healer” feat to get proficiency with the herbalism kit. Along with Alchemist’s supplies, creating healing potions could be much easier to do.

i actually really like the idea of pointing being like wine that needs to age. you could end up with a much better balance between time spent and the actual payoff if there’s some kind of fermentation process that takes the same amount of time regardless of what quantity of potion you’re brewing. but that 1000 day brewing time suddenly makes a lot more sense if you can get an entire barrel out of it (maybe with periodic skill checks required to make sure the process has no ill effects or accidents) rather than just one measly potion. i could see it leading to some interesting narrative stuff too, since it would encourage the players to set up a home base and return to it regularly to check on their potion still :D

you know who else would be more likely to write on vellum than on paper? elves. dnd elves live for over 700 years; what’s the point of keeping a journal of your adventures on paper, for example, if it’ll be dust by the time you’re in old age and want to revisit it to tell your elf grandkids cool stories about that time you fought a lich. maybe this is even part of why wizard spell books cost so much to transcribe - maybe *weird* shit happens if the paper a spell is written on decays but the spell itself remains; so spellbooks have to be made of special materials that resist decay, to avoid every wizard library potentially turning into a wild magic anomaly if they fall too far behind on repairing those old tomes

If we're talking about a tomb, housing the remains of an ancient emperor and his treasure, I can understand traps. The design is meant to protect the remains and loot and ensure it stays where it is. However, if it is a lair or base of operations, traps make less sense as it would also hamper the movements of those within. Also, bad guys are always arrogant and narcissistic enough to believe themselves unbeatable to begin with and their troops are good enough to defend. If it's just a cave system with some beasts and maybe primitive humanoids, who built the traps and why haven't they been triggered by the animals who would not understand traps to begin with so would not know to avoid them. Logic and reason are real buzzkills in fantasy gaming.

I always laugh at the idea of a general store in a medieval setting. Such things didn't exist. Most people had to make what they needed themselves, as "money" was not in wide-spread use. What they couldn't make themselves they usually bartered for. The whole "general store" thing is more a thing of the old American West. Store (as such) that did exist in medieval times were far more specialized.

Nah. Not a fan of this rule. Sometimes things can change drastically just before a players turn. And when decoding what to do, you often need to ask the DM how they would rule a certain ability or spell being used in a specific way. These situations take time to work out. Also why even call it the 1:10 rule? Why not just call it the “minute rule”?

I always have class levels for NPCs, so that colors my general stores a bit. My general stores typically have a variety of rural neccecities, but they also have material components for cantrips and first level spells. They have preservable foods often found in rations and a variety of the non-weapon, non-magical equipment found in level 1 equipment when you create your character. Some things are excluded and must be found at the local temple, blacksmith, or specialty stores if they exist. The idea is that rural communities are often secluded from helping hands and must be prepared to handle the more common problems associated with a Swords & Sorcery setting. A band of 3-6 level 1 villagers might try to handle pests, goblins, ect. On their own. Also, level 1 spell components are typically simple items, but also there might be villagers that dabble in the most basic of magic (Magic Initiate Feat) for their own convenience. I use the background feats optional rule, and NPCs can get those too. Usually it's stuff like the Chef or Tough feats. But it can be any feats really.

I'm starting up a campaign in a homebrew setting. The start of the campaign has the party working for the local Adventurer's Guild to clear out a small dungeon. Things are going to go wrong, and the party will have to escape the Underdark to return to their guild and make their report, including the events of their travels down below the surface. How the guild works is rather fun. Given the city is known as the City of Adventure, it shouldn't be surprising to hear the Guild Master acts as an almost head of state. Through annual elections, the Guild Master is decided, however there is a downside. A Guild Master cannot adventure, leading to self smear campaigns so would-be guild masters can avoid spending a year confined to the halls of the Guild. It's only a year, meaning the time one has to hold power is limited, and once the term is up, you do not get another chance. Term limit of one. If the party takes too long to resurface, then the Guild Master may not be the same man that sent them out.

So I the medieval times there was a number of beers or ales. A table beer for children has little to zero alchoul, cordials are a great way to keep fruit usable for a long time and apple cider in the time period was half the price of beer.
